What is the most important factor to consider when purchasing a CAD/CAM system ?  Most would say cost and number of features.  If you only use this type of spreadsheet style analysis, what will be overlooked ? 

Let's examine this question for a minute. How many hours will someone spend using this software over the next year ?  Only 2 hours a day or 8 hours every day ?  Let's say 6 hours per day.  At a conservative rate of $ 25.00 per hour, the labor cost will be roughly $ 37,500.00 this year alone..  If one system offered only a 15 performance savings over another system, how much money would you save in one year ?  That's right, there would be a savings of aproximately $ 5,625.00 this year alone in labor cost. That is more than the base cost of most CAD sytems !

Should we use AutoCAD for our design and drafting ?  There is no simple answer to this quesiton, it depends on your specific requrement and application.  If you have a large number of engineering drawings that need to be produced by a draftsman on a full-time basis, then the simple answer is sure, you have made the right decision. 

If your company is primarily a machine shop, then the simple answer is probably not.  If your company has CNC machinery, you willl find that your CAM system will be most likely be adequate to produce simple shop drawings.
